volumetric capture (volcap)

stage setup and operation

I am experienced in the construction and rigging of volumetric capture stages, including their comprehensive operation. This encompasses stage camera alignment, lighting set-up, the facilitation of software and firmware updates, proficient troubleshooting, and diligent maintenance. I also possess an intricate understanding of data flow within the system, coupled with an expansive knowledge of data validation processes.

I have also participated in establishing a pop-up volumetric stage for the Sky Golf Open in 2019. Additionally, I have been a pivotal contributor to the construction and setup of the world’s sole mobile volumetric capture stage, known as The Polymotion Stage in partnership with Mark Roberts Motion Control.

volumetric capture shoot supervision

I have a deep understanding of volumetric capture stage capabilities, which enables me to proactively recommend optimal solutions for directing actions and movements, while also providing assistance in wardrobe and hair and make-up choices that are best suited for volumetric capture. My proficiency extends to advising on props, enhancing the overall quality of volumetric productions.

image processing, 3d reconstruction and post-production

With seven years of experience in volumetric capture technology, I am well-versed in all aspects of the process, from stage build to processing and post-production. I have primarily worked with Microsoft Mixed Reality toolsets (now part of Arcturus Studio), and possess extensive knowledge of proprietary volumetric capture-solving software from Microsoft, as well as new software packages such as Arcturus HoloEdit suite. For the last 7 years, I worked as a volumetric capture tech art lead and then supervisor at Dimension Studio, one of the pioneering volcap studios in the world. I have recently moved to the Technical Art Supervisor role. Over the last few years, working alongside software developers at Dimension we developed custom in-house volumetric tools, which became one of the most advanced volumetric capture pipelines available out there. I know how to work with volumetric textures, edit them and do some advanced operations, including custom materials set-up and materialisation effects design.

My responsibilities included overseeing a team of creative technical artists and managing pipeline development for a number of various projects. My professional portfolio encompasses a multitude of ground-breaking projects, including world-first and high-profile volumetric video initiatives, such as Madonna’s Billboard Music Awards performance, creating holograms for Balenciaga’s “Afterworld” – a virtual fashion show of A/W 2021 collection, as well as capturing and post-production of volumetric scans of Sir David Attenborough for Green Planet AR experience. Furthermore, I have been involved in the volcap production of the Coldplay x BTS “My Universe” music video, and most recently, I and my team successfully delivered a substantial volume of volumetric crowd assets for the Whitney Houston biopic, “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” as well as digital human crowd assets for Peacock’s new TV series “Those About To Die” coming out in July 2024. I also know how to use the volumetric capture assets in 8th wall webAR experiences and within real-time software including but not limited to Unreal Engine and Touch Designer.

These experiences underscore my involvement in cutting-edge projects within the realm of volumetric video production. If you have any inquiries or require specific information about my background or expertise, please do not hesitate to reach out, and I will gladly provide guidance and insights.

research and development

I have also been involved in a number of R&D tasks and am always welcoming new ideas, challenges, responsibilities, and assignments that contribute to my professional development and the company’s objectives. I am interested in helping design smart solutions with automation, that minimise room for human error while keeping the efficient processing workflows.

  • automation of workflows
  • 3d reconstruction from images
  • 3d pose estimation and skeletal tracking
  • skeletal retargeting animation
  • prop replacement solutions
  • texture light baking
  • Machine Learning and AI tools in 3d graphics (stable diffusion, gaussian splatting, NERF)

training and mentoring

In 2022, I led the volumetric capture post-production training for the Nikon volumetric capture studio in Tokyo, while supporting and mentoring all my team members, actively engaging in ongoing client projects and tasks, and meticulously documenting new and existing workflows. I have also provided support and worked with various other departments within Dimension, helping effectively troubleshoot several projects. I have good mentoring and teaching skills and I have trained all volumetric technical artists in my previous team.
